About Me

My camera is my eye. But it’s also my voice. Photography is an extension of me, of how I perceive the world. It is my way of seeing and my way of communicating. That’s what photographs do. They help people to see. Themselves. Each other. Other places and other times.

Photography’s primary raw materials are light and time. When you take a photograph you take an instant out of time and alter it forever by holding it still. It makes the passing moment permanent. It brings the past into the present. More importantly, though it seems to deal exclusively with appearances, photography in fact reveals that nothing is what it appears to be.

To me, photography is the place where observation meets art. There’s always a very strong communication between me as a photographer and my subjects. It’s mostly non-verbal, something very intimate. The photographer is observing recording the moment forever. The subject is projecting the person he or she wishes to be. Between us is a camera, which famously cannot lie. But it can tell stories. And the story it tells is of the person I am at that time and place and the person my subject is at that instant. Neither of us will or can ever return to that moment.

A photographer can try to stage or frame reality, to use light and makeup and filters – but the basic miracle remains. The machine in my hand takes a moment of real life and, sometimes, with practice, makes it into a piece of art that can be understood by all people for all time.

For me photography is about finding something extraordinary in everyday places and people. It’s not about the things I see – it’s about how I see them.

I don’t impose concepts or manipulate my subjects when I work. I prefer to be surprised, to record a moment and a mood rather than try to create one. I approach every shoot with an open mind. Every picture is a new story.

I do extensive research before each shoot. I visit locations ahead of time to take in proportions, composition, light, and background. Paradoxically, it takes preparation to achieve the freedom I need to be truly spontaneous on the day of the shoot. It allows me to be fully relaxed with my subject and respond to moments as they happen, to open that communication that’s so crucial to revealing my subject essential nature.
